Learn how to properly fold, pack, and attach your Therm-a-Rest ZLite SOL foam pad to your backpack, plus tips for cleaning and storing it to extend its life.

Quick Answer

Fold your ZLite SOL on its accordion creases, strap it vertically or horizontally to your pack, and clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap when dirty. Avoid machine washing and direct heat storage.

Why Proper Packing and Care Matter for a Closed-Cell Foam Pad

Unlike inflatable pads, the Therm-a-Rest ZLite SOL uses closed-cell foam that won't puncture or lose air. But it can still degrade from UV exposure, abrasive surfaces, or improper folding. A little routine care keeps it comfortable and insulating for many seasons.

The accordion fold design makes it easy to pack, but many hikers struggle with getting it to sit flush against their pack or worry about it flopping around. The following steps solve those common frustrations.

How to Pack and Care for Your ZLite SOL

  1. Fold the Pad on Its Creases: Lay the pad flat and fold it along the pre-formed accordion creases. Each panel folds over the next, creating a compact stack roughly the size of a daypack. Do not try to roll it—the accordion fold is designed for this and rolling can stress the foam over time. Always fold along the creases; never force a different fold pattern.
  2. Attach It to Your Backpack: Place the folded pad flat against the back of your pack (between the pack and your back) or strap it vertically to the outside using compression straps. If your pack lacks side straps, thread a Voile strap or accessory cord through the pad's cutouts and around the pack. A common mistake is strapping it too loosely—the pad should sit snugly without shifting side to side. Test the attachment by shaking the pack; the pad should not slide.
  3. Clean the Pad When Needed: Wipe the pad with a damp cloth and a few drops of mild soap (like dish soap). Rinse with a clean damp cloth and let it air dry completely. Avoid submerging the pad—water trapped in the closed-cell structure is hard to remove and can add weight. Do not use bleach, solvents, or harsh detergents. A quick spot clean after each trip prevents dirt from grinding into the foam.
  4. Store It Flat or Loosely Folded: Keep the pad in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Store it flat or loosely folded (not compressed under heavy gear). Prolonged compression can flatten the foam and reduce its insulation value. A stuff sack is fine for transport, but for long-term storage, let the pad breathe. Avoid storing the pad in a hot car or garage; heat can weaken the foam.
